Botswana is a land of diverse and stunning landscapes, from the sandy vastness of the Kalahari Desert to the watery paradise of the Okavango Delta, Botswana is the ideal place to visit for an uninhabited wilderness feel and unique safari experience.
Botswana really is one of the ultimate safari destinations in Africa, their high income low impact tourism policy means the safari camps and lodges of are spread out and exclusive, so your game viewing is always completely private and usually spectacular.
Over the years Botswana has dedicated their entire army to anti poaching, which is why this country has become such a safe haven for wildlife.
The Okavango Delta
The Okavango Delta is one of the worlds largest inland Delta systems covering 15,000 square kilometers. A vast maze of permanent marshland, lush lagoons, islands and seasonally flooded plains. Each year floodwaters flow from the central African highlands to create this wondrous wetland one of Africa's top safari areas primarily because it is home to over 200,000 large mammals, 400 bird species and 70 species of fish.
The Delta is probably best known for its Mokoro rides, that take you through the maze like
channels and shallow lagoons of the Delta. These sturdy boats used to be hand crafted out of large Delta trees however today most of the boats used in the Delta are fiber glass replicas. Mokoros are a fantastic way to go game viewing - Expect to see many animals that feed on the grass and reeds such as Lechwe, Sitatunga, Elephant, Hippo and Crocodile as well as many others.
The Kalahari Desert
The Kalahari Desert is what you call a pseudo desert. It might be the longest stretch of sand anywhere in the world, but there are grasslands which supports a large variety of wildlife and throughout the year it receives a small amount of rain of between 5-10 inches which surprisingly create grazing areas of which over four hundred species of plants have been identified.
Synonymous with safaris The Kalahari Desert is ome to three Kalahari parks; Nxai Pan National Park, the Central Kalahari Game Reserve and Makgadikgadi Pans National Park where besides classic Kalahari animals such as zebra, wildebeest, oryx, eland, springbok and giraffe, these parks also have a well-deserved reputation for predators and you're likely to see black-maned Kalahari lions as well as cheetah, black-backed jackal, and brown and spotted hyena with rare wild dog and reclusive leopard also on the list. In addition many of Africa's smaller and more elusive animals such as wild cat, porcupine, aardwolf, meerkat and honey badger can also be witnessed.
