Destination Inspiration: Baku, Azerbaijan

With the next circuit on the F1 calender's set to take place in the city centre of Baku in Azerbaijan we here at Millionaire Escapes take a look at this ancient city taking on a modern world.

In Baku, Azerbaijan’s capital city postmodern skyscrapers rise up over ancient city walls and Soviet-era apartment blocks sit alongside 14th-century hammams. The 900-year-old Maiden Tower sits within the narrow alleyways of the Old Town – a symbol of the city’s past – while shiny buildings like the Flame Towers look to the future. One of the nicest spots for a ramble is Baku Boulevard, which runs along the Caspian Sea. This park-lined promenade dates back 100 years to when oil barons started building their mansions along the shore.

Named the ‘City of Winds’ because it is windy nearly year-round, with warm summers and cool, wet winters. For those looking to visit try April, May or October – temperatures aren’t too hot and the sun should be out!
